[Food] Another Kimchi -A Kimchi Restaurant in Gangneung- (김치, Kimchi)
Kimchijjigae of Yisunwal restaurant in Gangneung |
Most (nearly all!) Koreans love and enjoy eating Kimchi as a side dish for every meal. Moreover, this fermented, sour and spicy flavored vegetable side dish had already gained worldwide popularity a long time ago when it was first exported to other countries.
However, there are not many restaurants in Korea that specialize in Kimchi, only because most Korean families have their own favorite and delicious secret family recipe, which means Koreans don't usually go to kimchi-specialized restaurant unless the restaurant has a better, or gourmet, recipe.
Recently, I found this classic Korean dish restaurant that specializes in kimchi. Yes, Yisunwal restaurant is the only restaurant that serves dishes that use kimchi as the main ingredient.

The restaurant sign reads "Kimchi Specialist. Yisunwal's Great Kimchi Experience" |
Mrs. Sunwal Yi (Owner & Head Chef) runs the restaurant alone. She cooks, serves, collects payments, cleans the restaurant...yes, she does everything. |
Yisunwal restaurant's tables were already filled with people who were enjoying kimchi jjigae (Kimchi stew), kimchi duruchigi (Stir-fried kimchi and pork) and kimchijeon (Kimchi pancake). Four of us sat sat in a table and ordered two dwejigogi kimchijjigae (Pork kimchi stew) and kimchijeon (Kimchi pancake). We had to wait for some time to get what we ordered because it is a one-man restaurant.
Kimchijeon (Kimchi pancake). Pieces of squid, green onion, garlic and kimchi filled inside. |
Dwejigogi kimchi jjigae (Pork kimchi stew). Pork, tofu, onion, garlic, sweet potato noodle (glass noodle), spring onion and kimchi filled inside. |
Kimchijjigae, half-done egg and rice. Maybe it doesn't look tasty for you but Koreans go mad for it |
If you ever visit Gangneung and want to taste a variety of kimchi dishes, then please visit Yisunwal restaurant:) You will have a great opportunity to taste classic Korean kimchi.
Bon Appétit!
