“Peace Born from Sacrifice, Toward a Universal Value Transcending Time”
On May 25, 2024, HWPL Global 9th Branch held the 11th Annual Commemoration of the Declaration of World Peace with the theme “Peace Born from Sacrifice, Toward a Universal Value Transcending Time,” at Wolmido in Incheon. This event was sponsored by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs and co-hosted by HWPL Global 9th Branch and the Korea War Allied Nations Friendship Association. About 300 citizens of Incheon, including members of the Korean War veterans group, attended the event.
The Korean War was a tragic conflict that broke out in the mid-20th century, bringing the horrors of war to the Korean Peninsula and the international community. This war resulted in millions of casualties, leaving a divided nation and a wounded people.
HWPL Global 9th Branch stated that they planned this event to commemorate the sacrifices of veterans who fought for peace on the Korean Peninsula without regard for their own lives and to remind us of the value of peace that we, as their descendants, must pursue today.
Yoo Byung Chu, President of the Korea War Allied Nations Friendship Association, shared his experiences as a student soldier in the Korean War and said, “Beyond remembering history, I believe it is now time to leave the value of peace to our descendants by achieving a peaceful Korean Peninsula. I hope that, together with peace organizations like HWPL, the global community can unite to lay the foundation for a peaceful world.”
Monk Daeun of Yongcheonsa Temple, an invited speaker, stated, “I believe that religious leaders have a duty to guide civil society toward peace and harmony rather than conflict and strife. I hope today’s event will foster more active communication between different religions and expand HWPL’s and civil society’s peace activities across the Korean Peninsula.”
Dong-Mun Shin, honorary president of HWPL Global 9th Branch, explained the purpose of HWPL’s establishment and stated, “Members of HWPL Global 9th Branch will continue to move forward without interruption, and I will lead efforts to spread awareness of the spirit of sacrifice demonstrated by countless young men and student soldiers during the Korean War, beyond Incheon and throughout the Korean Peninsula.”
On this day, HWPL Global 9th Branch also presented letters of appreciation to war veterans, recognizing their service and sacrifice to leave peace as a legacy for future generations.
One member of IPYG who attended the event shared their thoughts, saying, “Remembering the history of the war and learning its lessons is essential to prevent future conflicts and build a peaceful world. I am grateful for the peace achieved through sacrifice and will continue to engage in peace activities to expand peace as a universal value.”
